Vayalar (Mar 15, 1928 - Oct 27, 1975) was born to Vellarappalli Kerala Varma and Ambalika Thampurati. He published works including Sargasangeetham, Mulankkadu and Padamudra. Born in Alappuzha, it was not accidental that he became committed to Communist Party of India and it became very influential during his young age. He is much more popular as a lyrics writer for Malayalam movies and started his career in the movie "Koodappirappu" (1956). He was awarded Kerala Sahithya Academy Award in 1961 and also President's gold medal for best lyrics in 1974.
